Avebury – 2005

Not far from Stonehenge is the little village of Avebury, which lies in the middle of what once was a magnificent neolithic ceremonial site. The original work began around 2850 BCE and like all these places, it was altered much during its use. This site includes a huge circular bank and ditch. Inside is the largest stone circle in Britain, and inside that are two smaller stone circles.

Mark and stone

Originally the outer circle had around 100 stones, but some of those have been destroyed.
